A lot goes into the planning and launch of a big event like the Jewel Residences Oceanway Ride. Earlier this week we shared with you the first part of our Q&A with Kate Riley, Founder of Oceanway Ride. Kate has been hard at work for a few years now, with this year being the year to launch this wonderful outdoors event. Today, we share the rest of our chat with Kate. If you haven’t already read the first story, you can read it here.
You’ve included as part of the event a 2-day Trade Expo. What can people expect and how can they find out more?
What better way to start the weekend by attending a Sports/Health and Wellbeing Expo on the foreshore of Surfers Paradise Beach. Running over two days, The Sports Heath and Well being Expo, presented by Fitness First is a free community event aimed to encourage people to get involved in physical activity, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles.
The Expo is an initiative to help boost participation in cycling, sport and recreation. We have paired industry professionals, from sporting enthusiasts to lifestyle businesses who will all be at hand to provide invaluable information to all who attend.
The Jewel Residences Ultimate Ride presented by Staminade is the longer of the courses. Who is this ride for and what sights will participants see along their journey?
The Jewel Residences Ultimate Ride presented by Staminade is for the more experienced road cyclist. However, those wanting to participate will find it suited if they regularly cycle and is great for those cyclists wanting to give a longer ride a go in a more controlled environment. While you will be sharing the road with normal road users, you will also have our ‘In Safe Hands’ team to help you stay safe along the way.
Participants will take an amazing journey along our beautiful coastline and visit some of our world-renowned tourist spots. It really is one of the most spectacular rides and will be an amazing experience for those participating.
The Family/Tourist Ride and the Little Legs Criterium are both a fun way for the younger participants to get out there and enjoy a ride in a safe environment. Why are these rides so important for the Oceanway Ride event?
The Family/Tourist Ride and Little Legs Criterium, presented by 7 News Gold Coast is such an important component of the Oceanway Ride. We really wanted everyone to be able to participant regardless of their age or ability, so creating a course which was safe and in a controlled environment would allow inexperienced road cyclists to be able to participant.
Cycling is fun! And being able to ride with your family and friends along Surfers Paradise beach will no doubt create some wonderful memories for many people. We see it growing as a family tradition, where children come along for their first Oceanway Ride and each year they come again, moving up on the courses and joining in with different family members and friends. Bike riding as a family is such a wonderful way of spending time together and I wanted to create something celebrating this. There will be lots of activity, music playing and special guests appearing along the way to add to the excitement.
The family rides are really important to us and a big part of the Oceanway Ride is about promoting “Safe Cycling”. Although the lane will be closed to traffic, it is important that participants follow the cycling road rules. We want to take this opportunity to educate people on safe cycling, which in turn will give people the confidence to keep cycling.
It is crucial we educate our children about road safety and as a parent with children who love to ride their bikes, by teaching them the cycling road rules it gives me confidence that they understand the road rules and become aware of their surroundings.
Being on the Gold Coast, we have over 1000km of on-road and off-road bikeways. Cycling is good for your health, it’s a popular fitness and recreational activity and over 60% of families on the Gold Coast have bikes. The City of Gold Coast has a great initiative in place to promote Cycling on the Gold Coast. The Queensland Government also have a great Cycle Strategy put in place until 2021. All these initiatives are great to encourage and support people to be active, cycling regularly and we want to help support these with the Oceanway Ride event.
A big part of the event is raising funds for local Surf Life Saving Clubs to help them buy much needed equipment. 10% of entry fees goes to the clubs and people also have option to donate directly to the club of their choice. Why is raising money for the clubs so important?
Gold Coast Surf Lifesavers are some of Australia’s most iconic volunteers. Their dedication to protecting our beaches and our families is truly honorable.
Oceanway Ride coincides with the official start of the 2016 Gold Coast Surf Lifesaving beach patrol season. This provides a perfect opportunity to form a partnership and help raise much needed funds for Gold Coast Surf Lifesavers: SLSQ South Coast (Southport – Burleigh) and SLSQ Point Danger (Tallebudgera – Rainbow Bay/Coolangatta).
At the very core of the Oceanway Ride is our desire to give something back, so for every cyclist participating, 10% of their entry fee contributes to buying surf rescue equipment for Gold Coast Lifesaving Clubs. For us, this is a great way to say ‘Thank you’ for protecting us and keeping our beaches safe. You can choose to donate your 10% of entry fee to a selected Gold Coast Surf Lifesaving Club or have your donation spread evenly across all clubs.
Raising Funds to support our Surf Lifesaving Clubs is important and we have extended our opportunity to raise funds for each of the clubs by also accepting donations with 100% of money raised going directly to the club of your choice.
